Job Description

POSITION: Director, People  Culture and Equity (PC&E)

DEPARTMENT: People, Culture & Equity (PC&E)

REPORTS TO: Senior Director, Operations

DIRECT REPORTS: Yes.  2-3 Direct Reports

LOCATION: Vancouver, Toronto, or Montreal

SALARY: $120,000 - $130,000

POSITION SUMMARY

The Director, People, Culture and Equity (PC&E) is a pivotal role that leads DSF’s organization-wide human resource systems, people and culture and change management strategy embedded in Equity.  This role is critical to supporting the organization's ongoing transformational and Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) journey to bring structure and transparency to our people practices and embed EDI principles into all organizational operations.

Working under the direction and guidance of the Senior Director, Operations and in partnership with the Senior Management Team and our Board, the Director, PC&E will help the Foundation to build and maintain a healthy, equitable and anti-racist culture where staff thrive in an accountable and relational organization.

The Director, PC&E is a collaborative team player who models transparency in interactions and understands power dynamics and the importance of building a relational culture. They skillfully manage complex situations and challenges and have strong interpersonal and communication skills. They are aligned with the values and mission of the DSF and demonstrate them in their leadership of the PC&E portfolio.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Below represents an overview of select responsibilities associated with this role:

  • Acts as a key member of the management team to develop and lead the HR initiatives for DSF to support the organization’s strategic priorities, vision, mission as well as to facilitate organizational health.
  • Ensures that an EDI and anti-racist lens is applied in all HR strategy, functions and activities.
  • Cultivates relationships within the organization to be recognized as a trusted advisor, mentor, and cultural role model.
  • Provides HR subject matter expertise for HR best practices and legislation that applies to the provinces within which DSF operates – BC, Ontario, and Quebec.
  • Oversees strategy, functions and activities internal and external recruitment; compensation, pay & benefits; performance management; succession planning; attraction and retention; employee listening & surveys; engagement & morale; wellness; health and safety; and training and development. 
  • Leads performance management processes and training and development planning. 
  • Coaches and models healthy team culture and best leadership and management practices. 
  • Takes responsibility for the health & safety program at DSF.
  • Leads and collaborates with the PC&E team to provide HR guidance and support to DSF including engaging with employees to support complex employee relations matters and seeking opportunities to expand competency of the PC&E Team.
  • Provides technical guidance for DSF people leaders to implement innovative HR & EDI strategies, solutions and programs based on proven people practices that effectively address key issues.  
  • Coaches and advises the Senior Executive and Management Team on people-related initiatives and supports in the implementation of HR policies and procedures to embed equity, fairness, and anti-oppression.
  • Researches, builds, and shares knowledge of best practices, trends and developments in HR &EDI and makes recommendations to improve the delivery of people programs. 
  • Acts as a change agent to effectively design and implement new initiatives and programs. 
  • Works closely with the PC&E team, Senior Director, Operations, and Finance team to ensure the completion of all administrative actions required in the delivery of HR services utilizing HRIS and seeking efficiencies. 

EXPERIENCE

  • Strong combination of education and experience with 7+ years’ experience in progressively responsible senior roles in HR management and leadership with a focus in EDI; CPHR designation strongly preferred. 
  • Not-for-profit HR leadership experience is an asset.  
  • Experience with meaningful and relational processes of accountability and repair for conflicts and complaints, particularly around equity issues.  
  • Demonstrated experience leading organizational change with an EDI lens.  
  • Experience collaborating and building relationships at all levels of an organization.  

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Leadership style that is inclusive, relational, emotionally intelligent, transparent, self-reflective, and comfortable working through moments of difficulty, conflict, and ambiguity to support your teams and the wider organization.
  • Knowledge and experience implementing current and emerging human resources practices, tools and systems.  
  • Working knowledge of current Canadian and provincial (BC, Ontario, Quebec) laws regarding employment and human rights.  
  • In depth understanding of and commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and anti-racism.
  • Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills.  
  • Strong diplomacy and relationship building acumen.  
  • Adept at managing organizational priorities.  
  • Skilled at managing and overseeing complex budgets.
  • Adept project manager with an inclusive, systems, and process mindset.
  • Proven skills in judgement, solid ethics, and discretion with all dealings (especially with confidential and sensitive issues).   
  • Bilingual (French) language skills, written and verbal, are preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Hybrid position in Vancouver, Montreal, or Toronto
  • Some travel may be required between DSF offices
