The Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness (CAEH) leads a national movement of individuals, organizations and communities working together to end homelessness in Canada. The CAEH works toward a Canada without homelessness. We do it by helping communities and governments across the country apply proven approaches to transform programs, policies, and systems toward the goal of ending homelessness.

THE ROLE

We are seeking a skilled and experienced Director of Finance to oversee the organization’s financial operations, ensure compliance, and support our mission through sound financial stewardship while fostering a service-oriented approach to meet the needs of the organization.
Reporting to the President & CEO, the Director of Finance is a member of the Leadership Team and plays a key role in ensuring financial stability and operational effectiveness necessary to advance our mission to end homelessness. The Director of Finance helps the CAEH effectively channel resources toward achieving its mission, ensuring the organization remains a trusted and impactful leader in ending homelessness in Canada.
 
  • Ensures that the organization's financial activities are aligned with its mission to end homelessness and our key objectives.
  • Manages all financial aspects of the organization, including budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, reporting, and compliance with regulatory and donor requirements.
  • Oversees the organization’s financial strategy, ensuring alignment with mission and goals
  • Provides financial analysis (annually and quarterly), forecasting, and strategic recommendations to the leadership team, President, and Board of Directors
  • Manages all accounting operations, including compliance, regular reporting and financial statement, bookkeeping, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, expenses, and the general ledger (Some of these duties and others may eventually be delegated when we are in a position to grow our team).
  • Implement and maintain robust internal controls to safeguard the organization’s assets and ensure accuracy of financial reporting
  • Evaluate and improve financial systems, policies, and procedures to enhance efficiency and accuracy
  • Serve as a key partner in organizational planning and risk management initiatives
  • Collaborate with fundraising team to develop financial models that support grant applications and funding proposals
  • Provide support for fundraising and grant writing efforts including development of a three-year fundraising budget, grant budgets, financial reporting, analysis and presentation of financial information.
  • Manage grant reporting and support development efforts with financial information and insights
  • Provide accounting and financial support for social enterprise activities of the Community Impact team including budgeting, proposal estimating, invoicing, financial analysis and forecasting.

Other Duties

  • Hire, supervise and mentor finance staff as required, fostering a culture of accountability and professional growth
  • Serve as a financial advisor and enhance financial understanding across all staff levels, ensuring that all employees are empowered with knowledge to make informed decisions that align with the organization’s goals.
  • In addition, other duties and special projects, as assigned, to advance the mission of reducing homelessness in Canada.

ABOUT YOU

  • You are a proficient accountant with expertise in charity financial management, a collaborative approach, and a commitment to providing financial insights and support that enhance decision-making and enables the organization to achieve its goals.
 

Core Qualifications and Competencies


Experience & Qualifications:
  • 7 to 10 years of increasingly senior experience, with experience in non-profit and charity accounting for organizations with budgets over $10M. Experience with full-cycle accounting required.
  • This role is required to maintain a Canadian CPA in good standing.
Accounting Principles:
  • Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) in Canada.
  • Familiarity with Accounting Standards for Not-for-Profit Organizations (ASNPO).

Bookkeeping & Software:
  • Proficiency in bookkeeping and accounting software like QuickBooks
  • Experience with donor management systems and integration with accounting tools.

Financial Reporting:
  • Preparation of financial statements, reports, and budgets.
  • Managing restricted vs. unrestricted funds and deferred revenue.

Taxation:
  • Understanding of charity-specific tax laws.
  • Experience with preparation of the T3010 Registered Charity Information Return.

Charity Legislation:
  • Familiarity with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) rules for registered charities.
  • Understanding of donor receipt and compliance requirements.

Internal Controls:
  • Implementing safeguards against fraud and ensuring financial transparency

Work Environment and Travel

  • This position can be located anywhere in Canada with a preference for a location that is easily accessible to an international airport. 
  • This position requires the ability to work from a virtual/home office location without the standard support available at a business office.
  • This position should expect to travel up to 5 times per year for up to 4 days per trip (including travel time)
