Position Title:
Employment Coach, YCafe Training Program (2 – 3 positions)

Location:
Tong Louie YMCA (14988 57 Ave, Surrey, BC V3S 7S6)

Terms:
Term, Full-Time

Hours:
35 hours per week
Schedule may vary between 8AM – 8PM, as per YCafe operational and program needs

Nature and Scope:

The YMCA of Greater Vancouver has delivered employment programs for over 35 years. Over this period, the organization has become one of the leading service providers in the provision of youth-oriented employment services and other underrepresented groups in the labour force. These programs are designed to support a wide range of job seekers, from youth with multiple barriers to employment attempting to land their first ever job, to newcomers to Canada looking to land their first job in their new home. The YMCA of Greater Vancouver has assisted thousands of job seekers in developing vital skills, acquiring vocational certification, building confidence and securing sustainable employment.

This position has the primary responsibility of working directly with participants of the program to deliver pre-employment and employment skills training in the classroom. This position will also supervise participants’ placements in the YCafe and Training Kitchen and provide on-going follow-up supports. The position will also involve assisting in setting up structure and process for the delivery of the program, outreach to the community in order to promote and recruit participants, and establishing connections with businesses in order to develop job opportunities as participants move towards employment. Additionally, the position will facilitate, improve, and evaluate workshops related to life, social, and employability skills. The work environment is very fast-paced, with a high volume of program participants.

Major Responsibilities:       

  • Assists participants in assessing their job skills for employment positions
  • Instructs in job seeking, application procedures, resume writing, interview preparation and job retention skills
  • Facilitates and develops in-classroom pre-employment, job search, career workshops and presentations
  • Support multi-barriered youth with pre-employment supports such as housing, mental health, addictions, income supports, food security, hygiene & clothing and addressing other barriers to securing and sustaining employment
  • Supervises and supports job placements for program participants in the YCafe and Training Kitchen
  • Provides labour market and community resource information
  • Monitors participant performance on the job and counsels participants when job performance is not satisfactory; works with participants to improve job performance and gain necessary job skills
  • Tracks participant activity and progress data
  • Initiates and maintains on-going contacts with a variety of business and industry representatives and job placement/training agencies to promote programs for participant placement
  • Locates jobs for participants who have successfully completed training programs
  • Matches job skills with applicant qualifications
  • Develops and executes creative outreach strategies to recruit program participants
  • Travels across Vancouver and Lower Mainland for meetings

Qualifications:

  • Post-Secondary Certificate, Diploma, or Degree in a related discipline, or equivalent work experience
  • Experience working in the food service sector, ideally training and supporting entry level staff
  • Established relationships within the local tourism and hospitality community and proven track record in job placement recruitment
  • Experience with developing and facilitating community based programming and services
  • Strong facilitation skills with proven experience leading pre-employment, job search, career information workshops and presentations to a youth audience
  • Ability to be flexible, adaptable and multi-task in high demand environment
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
  • Computer proficient – Microsoft Office (including Office 365, Word, and Excel)
  • High degree of independence and initiative within a team environment
  • Proven responsibility to coordinate tasks and work as part of a team
  • CDP or related certification is an asset
  • Emergency First Aid/CPR-C Certificate required, can be obtained within 30 days of start date
  • Ability to travel to meetings with employer and community partners
  • Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Reference Check/ Vulnerable Sector Search issued no later than six (6) months preceding your start date
  • The YMCA has implemented a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy requiring all staff and volunteers to be vaccinated as per the timelines set out by the province - one dose by September 13 and second dose by October 24.
