About MWC
Migrant Workers Centre (MWC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting access to justice for migrant workers by providing legal services, education, advocacy, and policy reform. We work to support the rights and wellbeing of migrant workers through trauma-informed and culturally sensitive approaches.Context for the role
MWC is seeking a part-time Outreach Worker to provide direct support to migrant workers in the Okanagan and Kootenays region. The position will work 30 hours a week (0.8 Full-Time Equivalent). This position will involve fostering connections, providing education, and empowering workers to exercise their rights. The Outreach Worker will play a key role in bridging migrant workers with community resources and supporting them in emergency and transitional situations.Responsibilities
- Establish connection and build sustained relationships with migrant workers by conducting visits to work sites, community events and other places where migrant workers gather, and by using digital communication such as WhatsApp and other platforms.
- Empower workers by connecting them with legal and community resources, whether they be provided by MWC or other organisations.
- Increase awareness of rights and responsibilities through educational materials and activities.
- Provide support to migrant workers during emergencies, such as workplace issues or climate-related crises, ensuring timely referrals to appropriate services.
- Coordinate with MWC staff in a proactive manner to share information, request support and resources, and ensure referred migrant workers are being supported on a timely basis.
- Collaborate with community partners to organize events promoting inclusion and wellbeing.
- Advocate for improved access to services for migrant workers in the region.
- Participate in monthly clinical supervision to process challenging situations and prevent secondary trauma.
Qualifications
- Resides in the Okanagan or Kootenays region.
- At least 2 years of experience in outreach, community engagement, or related roles.
- Proficiency in Spanish; this is required to communicate with most migrant workers in the region. Knowledge of other languages that are common in BC’s migrant worker community is considered an asset.
- Strong understanding of the challenges faced by migrant workers, particularly in agricultural settings. Personal experience of migration and migrant work is considered a strong asset.
- Ability to work with a flexible schedule; migrant workers are often only available on weekends or after work hours.
- Ability to work independently and travel within their region to visit worksites, migrant workers’ residences, community events, etc. Applicant must provide their own vehicle; MWC will compensate the outreach worker for all travel expenses.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with cultural sensitivity and awareness.
- Demonstrated ability to learn new topics and information – MWC will provide training on Employment and Immigration law.
Compensation
The salary range for this position is between $27 and $30 per hour or $42,120 to $46,800 per year, commensurate with skills and experience.MWC also provides:
