SPES is registered under the B.C. Societies Act and is recognized as a charitable organization by the Canada Revenue Agency. SPES operates from offices in Stanley Park (provided by the Vancouver Parks Board) and provides education, conservation, and research rooted in Stanley Park.
SPES is governed by a Board of up to fifteen Directors who are elected for two-year renewable terms. Operations are managed by a professional staff of thirteen led by the Executive Director, who reports to the Board. Our strategic goals are in the areas of programming excellence, community commitment, and financial sustainability and are based on our core values of collaboration, inclusion, and sustainability. A particular emphasis is placed on decolonization and the process of reconciliation.
About the Position:
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for the successful leadership of SPES.
The Executive Director:
- Delivers on the strategic mission, direction, values, and goals of the organization.
- Is responsible for all operations, financial oversight, contract maintenance and procurement, service enhancement/development, human resources, and risk management.
- Serves as the face of SPES, acting as a community spokesperson, and as the senior leader of the management team, staff, and volunteers.
- Has responsibility for management and day-to-day operations in accordance with the direction and policies established by the Board.
- Exercises best practices and judgement in acting in the interests of SPES, guided by the discussions and decisions of the Board of Directors.
- Collaborates closely with the Vancouver Parks Board and other stakeholders and provides assistance to enable the Board to carry out its governance functions.

About You:
You are a strategic leader and an exceptional communicator who can establish trust and credibility both externally and internally. With strong verbal and written communication skills, you can create a transparent and collaborative environment that prioritizes well being.
Your track record of effective senior leadership and teamwork in nonprofit organizations includes a solid understanding of financial management, including budgeting and reporting.
You have excellent skills in working with Boards, including guiding, supporting, and educating Board members.
You are comfortable in presenting SPES to the community and in building alliances with key stakeholders and other current and potential partners.
You have a relevant degree supplemented by non-profit experience, or a comparable combination of education and experience.
The Details:
This is a full-time hybrid location position. The salary range is $90,000 – $100,000 for a work week of 37.5 hours. The vacation period is five weeks per year. Shared cost benefits are provided, and eligibility for a shared contribution RRSP is attained after one year.
The position is subject to a three-month probation period and a vulnerable sector criminal records check. A current driver’s license and up-to-date immunizations are required.
